It's really clever! On the lovehearts.com web site you can personalise small packets of Love Hearts. I tested it out with the message "
Toxic Drums - www.toxicdrums.com - Eat your heart out!" Having been impressed by that I couldn't resist playing with the resultant label. The dancing Love Hearts above are two toxic drums pretending to be small packets of Love Hearts with a personalised message.
Love Hearts are one of those cultural icons of the UK. They are manufactured by Swizzels Matlow Limited which began life back in 1933 when David Dee joined forces with Matlow Bros. Ltd.
Matlow Bros. Ltd. was a small concern based in London which the brothers Alfred and Maurice Matlow started in 1928. Originally they were making desert jellies known as Table Jellies and jelly like sweets and confectionary such as Butternuts, Milky Bars, Cello Fruits and Jolly Lollies. In 1933 Swizzels Limited was formed as a joint venture between David Dee and the Marlow brothers in a factory in Star Lane, Canning Town, London E16. Rapid expansion required a move to Drivers Avenue in Plaistow, London E13 later that same year. Swizzels originally specialised in fizzy sweets like Dimple Mints, Navy Mints and Catch-O's.
With the union of Swizzles and Matlow a kind of magic was born and resulted in the well known Sherbits, Fruit Fizzers. Double Lollies, Parma Violets, Drumstick Lollies, New Refreshers, Carlton Mints.
Rainbow Drops, Fun Gums and Navy Sweets. In 1940 the company moved to a disused textile mill in Derbyshire. They have continued to expand and have remained a true British company for over 80 years. Love hearts were born in 1956 and have become one of Swizzels Matlow's best selling products and one of Britain's favourite sweets. They employ over 600 staff and are still essentially a family concern with the children and grandchildren of the founders still running the company with high moral standards and community spirit.
