Compassion in World Farming is a charity that was started in 1967 by a British farmer who was getting alarmed at the growing use of intensive factory farming. Compassion in World Farming are dedicated to reducing suffering and to promoting good practices and respectful farming. It was the Greek philosopher Pythagoras who, as long ago as 500 BC, observed: "As long as man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other." There are many reasons to treat animals with respect. Sometimes there is the suggestion that we somehow have to be ruthless and financially driven to survive and that animals unfortunately have to suffer as a consequence. Sometimes it is suggested that "reality" is tough and we have to resist being "sentimental". The real "reality" is that if we cannot live in harmony with our environment then we cannot live at all in the end. We are sensitive to our environment and it is a prerequisite of our long term survival and happiness that we respond to that sentiment in order to co-exist successfully in this universe. It is no longer a simple matter of opinion as to whether we treat animals with respect. It is not just a simple personal moral choice.¦ It is quite clear that whilst we tolerate abusive farm practices they will run the economic model and we will eventually be unable to survive. So quite apart from the obvious horror of cruel farming practises there is a vital requirement to change the way we farm animals today. If you feel that something should be done to help improve the way animals are treated in farming then please register your support by clicking this link --> Compassion in World Farming or click one of the banners to visit their web site today. |
